Labour activists plot to sack their defence chief for backing veterans

LABOUR’S defence chief is facing a Corbynista plot to sack her after she backed new laws to protect veterans from legal witch hunts.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt said she plans to bring in laws to stop ex-troops being charged after a time limit of 10 years unless overwhelming new evidence comes to light.

Labour activists are plotting to sack their party’s defence chief Nia Griffith

Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith appeared to back the move, saying she supports “measures to deal with false or vexatious claims”.

But she is facing a furious backlash from leftie activists who have demanded Jeremy Corbyn boot her out.

In an open letter, over 100 Corbynista activists – including Momentum boss Jon Lansman – demanded her sacking.

They raged: “We the undersigned wish to register our profound disappointment with Nia Griffith’s support for the government’s proposals to grant members of the armed forces immunity from prosecution.

“We believe that Nia Griffith must resign as she can no longer credibly represent the party. If she does not, the leadership must take action.”

Ms Griffith – a leading Labour moderate – has repeatedly clashed with CND-backing Jeremy Corbyn and his pacifist supporters.

She backs Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent – which Mr Corbyn has spent his political career campaigning against.

The Sun Says

OUR Armed Forces now know whose side Corbyn’s supporters are on. Not theirs.

Labour activists’ plot to sack Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith should terrify anyone who fears for our national security and our troops’ welfare.

Ms Griffith backs our nuclear deterrent and solid defence spending — and supports our military against false claims like those that saw our Iraq veterans wrongly accused.

So Corbynistas want her out. And these idiots hold sway over a party that the Tories’ implosion could put in power.

Britain will not be safe under Corbyn’s feeble pacifism.

Facing the wrath of leftie activists, Ms Griffiths was forced to clarify her remarks.

She said: “I did not say that British Forces, or indeed any group of people, should be above the law.”

She added: “Labour opposes any blanket immunity, and the International Criminal Court itself makes clear that statutes of limitation for the most serious crimes are not permitted in any circumstances – this is obviously right.”
