LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly has not been put off in his plans to buy Chelsea and is set to return with a second bid after an initial offer was rejected.

Boehly made an approach to Blues owner Roman Abramovich in November, but it was turned down as it fell short of the huge valuation the Russian has put on his club.

Abramovich was thought to want $3bn (£2.2bn) for Chelsea, and the American’s first offer was not close to that figure.

However, the Telegraph report that Boehly is still very keen to get his hands on the Blues and is likely to return with an improved bid.

Abramovich was thought to be open to selling the club due to visa problems stopping him working in the UK.

The 53-year-old has not visited Stamford Bridge in the last 18 months and is believed to have turned down four bids for Chelsea in that time, the latest from Boehly.

Despite the tricky situation, Abramovich now appears less likely to sell than ever, encouraged by a positive start to life under Frank Lampard as manager

Boehly is likely to bide his time, and could test the resolve of the Chelsea owner next year.

The American businessman, who is thought to be worth around £5m, has been open about his interest in buying a Premier League club for some time.

‘Football’s the biggest sport in the world,’ Boehly said in an interview with Bloomberg in September.

‘The passion that the fans have for the sport and the teams is unparalleled.

‘So when you start to think about what you’re trying to build with these teams you’re really trying to win and be part of a community.

‘Opportunity that we had with the Dodgers was really about a partnership with Los Angeles. How are we going to win? How are we going to drive championships? How are we going to build passion?

‘If you look at what the Premier League offers it’s all of those things. It’s the highest quality play, it’s the best players.

‘You also have a media market that’s just really developing. One of the great things the Premier League has is that it’s on Saturday morning in America. So you have an uncongested time slot that is now fully dominated by Premier League.

‘NBC has done an amazing job bringing that content. When I was growing up there was Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, but certainly I didn’t know about Man United, I didn’t know about Chelsea, I didn’t know about Tottenham.

‘Kids these days are fully aware of what’s the best and Premier League these days are the best.’
