Kylie Minogue has smashed a chart record with her new release Disco, becoming the first female artist to have a number one album in the UK in five consecutive decades.

There aren’t many people who can mesmerise fans the same way in the 2020s as they could in the 1980s – but clearly Kylie is one of them.

Disco, which is her 15th studio album, received 55,000 chart sales, also earning the biggest opening week of any new release in 2020 so far.

Beating out Sir Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard and George Michael, it’s the eighth number one for the Aussie star.

Kylie, 50, said: ‘Official Charts Company, thank you so much. Disco has entered the charts at number one.

‘I don’t know what to say, I’m lost for words, thank you to everyone who has supported this album and this campaign, it means the world to me.

‘I’m so touched that it’s made its way to your hearts. I love it.’

Little Mix followed closely behind, securing the number two spot with their album Confetti.

They’ve still got plenty to celebrate, claiming the most-streamed album of the week and their sixth consecutive top five offering.

Meanwhile, Dame Shirley Bassey scored number five with her album I Owe It All To You, making her the first female artist to claim a Top 40 album in seven consecutive decades.

Kylie put her all into her new album, revealing that she had a ‘meltdown’ while recording it.

Speaking to Music Week about having to record music in isolation, she explained: ‘I’d been going at such a pace every day and juggling different writers, producers and schedules and trying to be prepared – it really wore me out.

‘I had a slight, well, meltdown. Probably sounds a bit dramatic, but I realised I’d been going at such a pace because I was driven to get this done.’

She continued: ‘There was a point near the end where I actually felt just so drained.’

Clearly her hard work has all paid off!
