A jumper worn by Kurt Cobain six months before his death which has never been washed, has sold at auction for $334,000 (£260,400).

The iconic piece of clothing was worn by the Nirvana frontman during his MTV Unplugged performance six months before his death, and fetched the enormous amount due to the unique nature of the piece.

Complete with dark stains and a cigarette burn on the front, the jumper was last bought by Garrett Kletjian, owner of Forty7 Motorsports four years ago for $137,500 (£107,200), so it’s safe to say he made a pretty decent return on his investment.

Kurt wore the olive green button-up jumper for his MTV Unplugged performance recorded less than six months before he died by suicide aged just 27 in 1994, and the item has not been washed since he owned it.

The acoustic show was released posthumously and has gone down as one of his most recognisable performances of his career.

The cardigan was sold by Julien’s Auctions, and CEO Darren Julien explained the appeal: ‘This cardigan, it’s the holy grail of any article of clothing that he ever wore.

‘Kurt created the grunge look; he didn’t wear show clothes.’

It had initially been predicted to fetch between $200,000 to $300,000 (between £156,000 and £234,000), but smashed that estimate.

It’s not the only item of Kurt’s belongings that has sold for enormous money at auction – his left-handed Fender Mustang guitar which he used during Nirvana’s In Utero tour also sold for $340,000 (£265,000).

Handwritten lyrics and drawings by the singer have also sold for excess of $7,000 (£5,500) each and a signed guitar neck (without the rest of the instrument) also went for $32,000 (£25,000).
