Kurt Angle's WWE retirement match at WrestleMania 35 set to be 14 years in the making

When Kurt Angle finally retires from in-ring competition next month, he will do so on the grandest stage of them all: WrestleMania.

Angle has announced that next moth’s extravaganza at MetLife Stadium will draw the curtain on his illustrious career.

Subsequently, all eyes have turned to who will face off against the former WWE champion.

And it looks set to be the gold medallist taking on the gold standard, Shelton Benjamin for the first time in more than a decade at The Show of Shows.

Angle is set to call it a day

Benjamin made a stunning return to action on Raw last week, attacking Seth Rollins from behind.

Now he looks set to face Angle at WrestleMania 35, after being name-dropped by the veteran  last week, and then taking to social media to challenge the great.

And Angle is certainly receptive to the idea.

He replied, simply: “I’m game!!!!”

Benjamin and Angle first appeared on WWE TV together in 2002, when Shelton joined “The World’s Greatest Tag Team” alongside Charlie Haas; Angle operated as their mentor for a period.

Under Angle’s tutelage, Benjamin and Haas won their first tag team championships just a month after their debut and became two-time champions before going their separate ways.

Angle and Benjamin have shared a ring on numerous occasions, but the last time was 14 years ago.

Another name that had been mentioned, including by Angle himself, is that of John Cena.

Legend Cena took on Angle in his SmackDown debut in 2002

Angle was Cena’s first televised WWE bout and it was the 16-time champion who inducted Angle into the WWE Hall of Fame a couple of years ago.

However, it seems increasingly likely that Cena is set to face US Champion Samoa Joe in New Jersey next month.

Other names mooted for Angle’s farewell include AJ Styles, Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley, but like Cena, all similarly have directions in which they’re heading.

As such, with Angle set to name his opponent on Monday Night Raw this week, all signs point to the battle 14 years in the making.
