Fellow YouTuber Josh Brueckner secured a victory over Tyler Smith in his first professional bout. Moments after his win was confirmed, he then welcomed his girlfriend into the ring and proposed to her. However, the move has not gone down well with boxing fans on Twitter, who claim the proposal has done the sport no favours.
Brueckner has more than one million followers on YouTube and was fighting ahead of the controversial bout between KSI and Logan Paul.
He is dating fellow fitness influencer Katie Betzing who said yes after he asked her to marry her.
Online, fans were furious.
One wrote: “Doesn’t do boxing many favours when Josh Brueckner just proposed to his girlfriend live on air after his win…”
Another said: “What was more embarrassing… the boxing or the proposal…?”
A third summed it up by posting: “Josh Brueckner wins and calls out his girlfriend for uh… marriage.
“She says yes.
“I’m getting paid to watch this event, by the way.
“In real American dollars.”
According to The Mirror, Katie had no idea the proposal was going to happen.
As Brueckner invited her into the ring, he told her: “I’ve always wanted to do this baby.”
The fight is taking place at the Staples Centre, Los Angels.
Before Saturday’s bout, Olympic gold-medal winning boxer Luke Campbell exclusively gave his verdict on the fight to Express Sport.
He said: “There’s two sides to it and I can see both sides.
“On one side, the event can bring new fans to the sport, obviously both of them are very popular, they’re going to make a hell of a lot of money for it as well.
“Everything now is about viewers and numbers, this YouTube world, it’s all about that.
“On the other, if you’re a professional boxer and we’re speaking barely boxing, you’re thinking ‘this is ridiculous’.”
