Kristen Bell has opened up about the way she approaches the ‘sex talk’ with her two daughters, and it’s quite enlightening.
The Good Place actress revealed that she and husband Dax Shepard think it’s ‘really important’ to give Lincoln, nine, and Delta, seven, ‘context’ about sex so that they understand it with the hope that it becomes a positive experience for them in the future.
The 41-year-old appeared on Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen’s newly-launched podcast Broad Ideas and opened up about her honest parenting style, especially when it comes to that difficult talk.
‘It’s really important to give them a little bit more context about how it’s relative,’ Kristen began.
‘‘’Daddy and I do this because we have those feelings towards each other. There are feelings we each get in our private parts for each other. We also get in our brains and in our bellies,”’ she added, revealing what she tells her daughters.
The Frozen star explained that since her daughters haven’t experienced that kind of attraction yet, Kristen tries to relate it to something that they do care about.
She tells them: ‘“Remember how you weren’t interested in swimming, and then you got interested in swimming? You’ll hit a point where you’re starting to have those feelings.”’
‘“It’s going to feel butterflies are in your stomach and it’s going to feel like your crotch is on fire and it’s going to feel like a whole bunch of things like that.” And they’re like, “Really?”’
Kristen has admitted before that her information-based approach does sometimes ‘bore’ her daughters. On WTF with Marc Maron, the TV and film star previously said her daughters often try to change the subject when she brings in the scientific terms for reproduction.
She recollected: ‘They’ve asked about sex before and Dax says, “Well, there’s a penis, there’s a vagina and there’s an ovum and there’s ejaculate.”
‘And they’re like, “Can I have some juice?!” They’re just off of it. They don’t care.’
Kristen is trying to teach her daughters that not only that sex can be a ‘positive’ and ‘happy’ experience, it is also a mutual act.
‘Sex is wonderful,’ Kristen added at the time. ‘I want my kids to have sex. I want them to have good, healthy, positive, happy, wild sex.’
She revealed some of the best reframing advice that Michelle Monaghan gave her about speaking to her girls about this sensitive topic.
The Veronica Mars actress continued: ‘When you’re having the sex talk, the one thing to make it even more sex-positive is when you say, “And then the man put his penis in the woman’s vagina,” you say, “And then, the woman takes the man’s penis and puts it in her vagina.” And all of a sudden you completely change the power dynamic for the woman hearing that story.’
Kristen and Dax, who have been together for 15 years and married since 2013, are one of the most open and honest celeb couples when it comes to parenting methods – and everything else in their personal lives.
Last year, the pair got properly involved in the Hollywood debate about how often they bathe, and wash their children, with the couple admitting they now just ‘wait for the stink’ on their kids.
