Kim Kardashian reveals 2nd Marilyn Monroe dress lined up for Met Gala

Kim Kardashian has revealed the second Marilyn Monroe dress that she acquired as a back-up contender for her red carpet appearance at the 2022 Met Gala, but did not end up wearing it.

On Friday, Kim shared unseen pictures of her wearing a green sparkling Norman Norell number that the Some Like It Hot movie star had worn to the Golden Globes in 1962, and posed with the actual trophy that Marilyn received for ‘World Film Favorite.’

The 41-year-old reality star ultimately chose to attend fashion’s biggest night wearing the beaded Jean Louis gown that Marilyn wore when she famously sang Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy in 1962 – sparkling backlash after she admitted to losing 16lbs in just three weeks to fit into it.

In a video posted by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! earlier this week, Kim was heard talking about the back-up option of the green dress as she struggled to fit the Jean Louis piece around her famously large derriere, and was forced to keep the back of it open.

It comes after Kim was met with criticism for acquiring Marilyn’s 60-year-old ‘national treasure’ dress to the star-studded gala, saying she risked damaging ‘fragile’ gown for ‘an ego-boost and a photo-op.’

Though Nick Woodhouse – who looks after Monroe’s estate – said he believed the iconic star would have approved of Kim wearing her gowns.

However, in her lengthy Instagram post to accompany the picture, Kim told fans that she had put a lot of time and research into channeling her ‘inner Marilyn’ and was grateful to Heritage Auctions for allowing her to wear the second dress.

‘To top off my night after The Met, I had the honor of changing into Marilyn Monroe’s Norman Norell dress that she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962 – where she received the Henrietta Award For World Film Favorite,’ Kim wrote in her Instagram caption on Friday.

‘In my quest to find the Jean Louis hand beaded dress that I wore to the gala, I discovered @Juliens_Auctions owned Marilyn’s iconic green sequined gown. Further inti my research I found out that the owner of the Golden Globes that she received that evening was non other than my florist @jeffleatham.’

She concluded: ‘I saw this all as a sign the way that all of the stars aligned. It will forever be one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to channel my inner Marilyn in this way, on such a special night. Thank you Julien’s Auction and Jeff for helping to make this memory possible.’

Norman David Levinson – known professionally as Norman Norell – was an American fashion designer who was famed for his elegant gowns, suits, and tailored silhouettes.

In footage released by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Kim’s boyfriend Pete is heard saying, ‘What was the other dress?’ with Kim responding, ‘the one you said you don’t like.’

‘Oh yeah, that one looked like a Halloween party,’ Pete adds, calling it a ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ party dress.

There had appeared to be some pre-Met Gala panic, as in the video, Kim was desperately trying to make her first choice work, as she decided to leave the dress open at the back and cover her backside with a fur shawl.

‘Oh my god! Yeah, can we use that tie and tie it, and keep it open?’ Kim asks when she sees that the dress just about fits. ‘The tie comes with it right? What if we did that and then put a fur over it.’

That meant that Kim wore the dress unzipped while she walked the red carpet of the Met Gala, before changing into a replica of the dress once she was inside the venue.

Marilyn’s glittering beaded gown was designed by Jean Louis, and has been on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum in Orlando, FL, after they bought it from Julien’s Auction for $4.81million.

Marilyn – who died at 36 from a drug overdose in 1962 – is said to have paid $1,440 for the custom piece to the designer, and it holds the record for the for the most expensive dress sold at an auction, making it one of the most expensive dresses in the world.

Legend has it that the garment was so tight, Marilyn had to be sewn into the dress prior to her performance for the President.

Kim had the same struggle when she discovered the dress didn’t fit her, and began to cry when she learned that the dress could not be altered.

The ex-wife of Kanye West told Vogue how she went on a ruthlessly strict diet deadline in order to slim down and wear the dress to the Met.

‘I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein,’ she told the outlet. ‘I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.’

Marilyn’s unique hourglass figure and exact measurements have been debated for decades, but one dress maker claimed she was 5’5″ tall, with a 35″ bust, 22″ waist, and 35″ hips. Her bra size was said to be 36D.

Kim once said of her own measurements: ‘I am a size 27 jeans… My measurements are 38, 26, 39. But remember I am 5’2″ and 1/2 and everyone carries their weight in different places.’
