A new interview with Kiefer Sutherland has caught the 24 and Designated Survivor actor in a brillant mood, and he even took a trip down memory lane to chat about 1987’s seminal horror classic, The Lost Boys.
Sutherland starred as the head of an undead biker gang in Joel Schumacher’s beloved vampire film, which hasn’t aged much, despite being 80s as all hell. It seems there might still be some old footage from the cutting room floor somewhere, too, as Sutherland told Yahoo Entertainment he remembers the stomach-churning scene where his character, David, feeds on a group of beach revellers, going much further over the line of taste when they original filmed it.
“There was a scene that actually didn’t make the movie that I was really, really excited about, mainly because it was just so violent I couldn’t believe that we were doing it,” Sutherland said. “It’s sort of in the movie — they cut around it — but there was a guy on a beach and he was bald and they had made a prosthetic cast of his head. And the part of the scene that I loved the most was literally, it was like a cake: I ate the whole back of his head off and blood just went everywhere. I had been directed to just smile like a child having cake, and the two images were so frightening and scary.”
Sutherland also recalled tampering with his iconic, Billy Idol-esque hair aesthetic on the second day of filming, telling the stylist in hair and makeup to cut the top off his shaggy blonde mop, which the director wasn’t too happy about.
“It’s actually a funny story. Joel Schumacher wanted me to have long hair, and I had long hair at the time and then he wanted it white, a timeless kind of thousand-year-old look. So I dyed it white and my hair was like normally long, like long everywhere. And I just looked like a wrestler! I hated it. And I just thought, ‘That’s awful’.
“And Billy Idol had just come out… and he looked cool. I mean, he just looked badass. And so I thought, ‘Well, he’s got white hair. That could look really cool. But Joel wanted my hair long. And so I actually think I might’ve been responsible, or at least partially responsible, for creating the mullet. And for that, I’ll apologise to the death.”
Can we agree that all is forgiven?
Warner Bros released The Lost Boys in the summer of 1987, and the film became a modest hit at the box office, eventually spawning several straight-to-DVD sequels that brought back Frog Brother Corey Feldman into the fold. A new series based on the film has been in the works at The CW for some time, overseen by Veronica Mars and iZombie creator Rob Thomas. However, a pilot for the project was totally scrapped earlier this year, and the team went back to the drawing board.
