Khem Fest In Newark Celebrates Comics, Film, Video Games – Newark, NJ Patch


NEWARK, NJ — The 5th annual Khem Fest will return to Essex County on Saturday, April 13 at the Hahne’s Building at 50 Halsey St. in Newark from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to a news release from organizers, the 2019 event will be followed by the first annual Khem Animation Film Festival Awards at 6 p.m. Tickets, partnership information and volunteer opportunities can be found at Khemfest.com.

Organizers wrote:

“PBS Media and Musuyanama Women’s group have teamed up to bring you this all-ages celebration of comics, animation, video games and more. Jam packed with panels, workshops, gaming and animation screenings throughout the day, we are proud to partner with Newark Public Schools, NJIT, Rutgers, P&G Bank, Launch Pad, The TKB Report, City of Newark, New Jersey and the newly renovated Hahnes & Co. which provides the perfect stage for Khem Fest and the Khem Animation Film Festival (KAFF).”

Organizers stated:

“KAFF celebrates the work of up and coming animation filmmakers and also serves as an incredible opportunity for networking. Offering game development seminars, STEM LAB, 3D printing, a comic book marketplace, panel discussions, video gaming lounge, student showcase, art galleries and more. Thousands of attendees have participated in Khem Fest in the past five years and we look forward to welcoming you.”

According to the festival’s website:

“The Khem Comic Fest is an annual convention founded by comic book creator and educator Naseed Gifted in 2015 that features creators of comics, books, film, and other media with a focus on artists and characters of color. The goal of the event is to use comic books, animation, films and popular culture to develop youth literacy and expression through S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Math).”
