Kevin Clifton: Strictly star on leaving Broadway: 'I just wanted to please people'

Kevin Clifton, 37, who recently quit BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, has revealed the reason why he initially quit Broadway. The professional dancer admitted that he “wasn’t really taking care” of himself.

While reflecting on his time with Broadway where he was performing in “packed out Broadway theatres in New York”, Kevin said he made the decision because he wasn’t “putting himself first”.

The former Strictly pro told those listening to his podcast, The Kevin Clifton Show: “I just wanted to please. I wasn’t really taking care of myself.

“So I decided to leave Broadway and join the cast of Burn The Floor in Busch Gardens, theme park in Florida,” he explained.

Kevin From Grimsby said his co-stars thought leaving Broadway was “absolute madness” and they apparently questioned his decision at the time.

In an earlier episode of his podcast, The Kevin Clifton Show, the dancer spoke about he and Frankie did the Tango to Defying Gravity from Wicked for Halloween week.

He said: “Apparently the idea of it was passed around.

“It was the producers of Strictly who came up with the idea of doing Defying Gravity, they just didn’t quite know how to use the music, what dance it would be, or how to go about it.”

Kevin then revealed that it was the singer’s “best dance” while they were on the show.

The Strictly winner of 2018 has also spoken out about how grateful he is to the BBC for taking him on to be a part of Strictly.

In his announcement on Twitter, Kevin said: “I am grateful to the BBC and Strictly Come Dancing for giving me the opportunity to have been a part of something truly special,”

While looking back on his time, he added that he was leaving “on a high” and it was the right time for him to leave the programme.

The 37-year-old said: “I wanted to leave on a high and have therefore decided the time has come to move on and focus on other areas of my life and career.”
