Kendall and Bella's makeup artist shares the secrets behind the top models' Met Gala looks

She’s known internationally for her glow giving skills and has over 800k Instagram followers watching her every makeup move. GLAMOUR caught up with makeup artist and La Mer Makeup Ambassador Mary Phillips on her top tips for red carpet skin, the shades of the season, and the inspiration and techniques behind Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner‘s Met Gala looks…

GETTING THE GLOW

“I always tell my clients to get some exercise and gets 8 hours of sleep before a big event. But having a good skincare regime is extremely important. You’re not going to get that glow if your skin is dry. It’s all about hydration and creating that beautiful canvas.”

For her signature glowing skin, Mary has a few failsafe tricks and application tips; “I mix a little La Mer Renewal Oil into foundation and swirl it in with a big fluffy powder brush. Then I’ll put a little La Mer Creme onto my ring finger and tap onto cheekbones for that lit from within look. I love using skincare as part of the makeup look.”

MET-WORTHY MAKEUP

The Camp theme of this year’s Met Gala might seem a little different from the sheer makeup that Mary usually creates, but the makeup artist never shies away from a bold eye or statement lip.”Kendall and Bella both love beautiful skin and neither of them like anything too heavy. We’ll do a cool eye or neon liner but we always leave the skin as fresh as possible,” she says.

“For the Met, a lot of the clothes are really outrageous and I feel like a lot of the makeup people are trying to compete with the fashion side of things, but I want everything to be on the same page. I don’t want the eye to be drawn to too many things. Like with Kendall, it’s a tiny flick of red at the end of her black liner that you can’t see unless you’re up close. I want to let the outfit be the star.”

SO HOT, SO NOT

“I love monochromatic makeup and using the same shades on lips, cheeks and eyes. I’m really into mauve and brown shades so I’ll use that all over so it’s all matching. I also love a really bronzed glow and super glossy lips,” says Mary of her favourite makeup look.

Trend-wise, Mary’s all about neon; “I love all the neons and bright colours people are using at the moment. And they’re really painting it on. Makeup is like art!”

However, she won’t be sorry to say goodbye to the liquid lip trend. “I was never into the matte liquid lipsticks. I think people are starting to embrace more creamy finishes. which I love. The creamier the better!” As for her go-to creamy lipsticks? “Tom Ford, KKW Nudes, Charlotte Tilbury in the sahde Birkin Brown and Suqqu.” Noted.
