Sir Keir praised the “incredible” NHS workers, and said he and his family have been visiting her in intensive care for four days.

Speaking today, he said: “She’s awful, I’m afraid.

“She’s still in intensive care and it’s been very very hard for my wife and her family. So a very very difficult few days for us.”

Asked for a prognosis, the leadership favourite labelled it a “very bad accident”.

He continued: “It’s very difficult, very very difficult.

“The NHS are absolutely brilliant in what they’re doing and we want to just thank them for everything they’re doing.”

Sir Keir and his solicitor wife Victoria Starmer have been married since 2007.

It comes as the leadership frontrunner returned to the campaign after four days off.

Appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, the 57-year-old hit back when asked if it was “racist to say there are too many foreigners in Britain”.

He said: “Can I just say how uncomfortable I am about that just at the moment.

“We’ve just spent four days in intensive care with my mother-in-law where there are people of every nationality giving her the most incredible care.

“And therefore pitching this debate in that way I think is… just got to be very very careful.”
