THERE is nothing better than an ice-cool drink on a hot summer’s day but the price charged by coffee shops can leave you cold.
You don’t need to buy expensive brands, however. Try these cheap alternatives instead.
ROSÉ A GLASS: Frosé, also known as frozen rosé, is my favourite naughty-but-nice treat.
Make it on the cheap by pouring Lidl’s £2.49 Baywood British Rosé into a roasting tin and placing in the freezer overnight.
The next day, mix in strawberries with sugar, blend with lemon juice and crushed ice and purée until smooth. Freeze again until thickened.
SAVE: Up to £10 on bar-bought frosé.
DO NOT COF’ UP: Starbucks’ iced coffees are a not-so-cool £2.70, but you can brew your own at home after a trip to Asda.
Mix coffee and milk with ice cubes in a blender for a ’Bucks-worthy frappuccino.
SAVE: an average £1.50 per coffee
IN-GIN-IOUS: What is better than a Calippo? A boozy Calippo!
Aldi is selling four-packs of gin popsicles for £2.99 — just 75p per lolly. That is cheaper than Gordon’s gin and lime two-pack, £3 at Tesco. Or make your own by mixing 25ml gin, 40ml lemon juice, 15ml sugar syrup and 145ml tonic water in lolly moulds. Sipsmith’s 5cl gin bottle is £3 and will make 12. That works out at 25p each.
SAVE: £1.25 per lolly compared to Gordon’s two-packs at Tesco
ROYAL SLUSH: Treat your kids to a DIY Slush Puppie. Pour sugar and water into a bowl, mix in flavouring and food colouring and freeze for three hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
If you make them regularly, invest in an Andrew James slushie maker.
At £19.99, it is £20 less than the official Slush Puppie brand version. Or buy a three-pack of Slush Puppie sachets for £3 at Tesco, compared to around £2.50 per drink in restaurants.
SAVE: £1.50 per Slush Puppie with sachets
ICE ICE BABY: It is £2.65 for an iced tea at Costa, but it is easy to whip up at home. Pop four herbal tea bags into a one litre jug and fill halfway with boiled water. Let it brew, add cold water and top with ice and fruit.
SAVE: £1.50 on an iced tea
