TELL me the tooth . . . how well do your kids look after their gnashers?
With the cost of routine NHS dental appointments having gone up five per cent this year, I asked telly dentist Dr Guy Barwell, how to keep youngsters’ teeth sparkling.

- SUGAR SWAP. Dr Guy says: “Sugary drinks are one of the worst culprits for tooth decay, so replace with water — it’s cheaper and won’t rot teeth.” Giselle adds: Encourage your kids to drink more water by adding fresh fruit to their cup, or get them their own personalised water bottle. There are some great ones for only £6 on Etsy — far cheaper than those at funkypigeon.com for £12.99.
- POWER UP. Dr Guy says: “Electric toothbrushes are far more efficient. You can start using one as soon as your child’s teeth come through.” Giselle adds: Save £3.52 at Superdrug where battery-operated brushes are available in Minions or Trolls designs, down from £6.99 to £3.47.
- TIME IT. Dr Guy says: “Your children should brush their teeth for two minutes, once in the morning and once before bed.” Giselle adds: Download free app Brush DJ, which plays your favourite song for two minutes to make brushing more fun. It is cheaper than buying a toothbrush timer for £1.68 on Amazon. Or pop down to The Range for a Paw Patrol-themed brush featuring lights that stop flashing when you have brushed for long enough. It costs £1.99.
- FULL DISCLOSURE. Dr Guy says: “For older children, using disclosure tablets is fine now and again — and a great way to see if your child has brushed properly.” Giselle adds: Disclosure tablets make plaque visible. If your child’s teeth turn red, they have done a great job. If they turn blue, they need to brush again. Boots’ kids’ plaque reveal tablets cost £2, which is 99p cheaper than options on Amazon.
