Tony Adams has urged Kieran Tierney to ‘keep kicking’ his Arsenal teammates in training as an aggressive approach is yielding good results for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The Gunners booked their place in the FA Cup final with a superb 2-0 victory against Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday night.

Left-back Tierney was asked to fill in at centre-back and was once again a standout performer in a surprisingly solid defensive display from Arsenal.

Reports surfaced last week that when the Scotland international first arrived in north London, several of his new team-mates asked him to scale back his aggressiveness in training.

And when discussing the claims with Stadium Astro, Adams admitted he would encourage the 23-year-old to keep hold of his tenacious attitude on the training ground.

He said: ‘If I speak to Tierney, I’ll tell him, ‘Just keep kicking them in training and teaching them the way’, because it’s working for them, we got into the final of the FA Cup.’

Tierney’s old school attitude is similar to that of Gunners icon Adams, who revealed he would often give flair players like Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry a rough ride in training to test their mettle.

He added: ‘I think you train as you play. I always say that if you’re going to work against Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp every single day, then you just kick them to make sure they go away and go and play on the other side of the pitch, because you don’t want to be shown up every day of the week.

‘Steve Bould as well was at the club at the time with Martin [Keown] and we kept people like Dennis Bergkamp on their toes.

‘We kind of improved them by testing them. If we didn’t test them in training, they might not have got to the level they got to.

‘So, we felt we were doing them a service whereby every single day we turned up and we tested him and said, ‘Look, you don’t get any days off here’.’
