Katy Perry breaks down in tears as American Idol contestant suffers seizure on stage

Katy Perry broke down in tears when an American Idol contestant made their grand return after suffering from a seizure on stage.

Makayla Brownlee fancied her chances at winning the competition, and announced to the judges that she’d be singing Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves.

However, before the hopeful even started the song, she ended up having a seizure.

Judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie instantly followed her off stage to make sure she was okay, while Katy stayed by the audience.

Makayla’s dad Mark was on hand to help, where he explained: ‘Makayla has a condition that is pretty rare.’

In a voice-over, Makayla could be heard adding: ‘In seventh grade, I was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope.

‘It’s a heart condition that causes me to react to stress differently than other people, and it could cause a seizure.

‘The stress this week has definitely been a lot harder on me than anything I’ve ever gone through.

‘There’s nothing I can do to prevent a seizure. When I’m stressed out, my body just reacts differently.’

Her dad continued: ‘She can’t control it. She’s embarrassed, but physically, she’s 100 per cent all right. This opportunity is so important to her.

‘I’d hate to see it inhibited in any way because she’s such a good singer. She works so hard at it.’

Just two hours later, the show had returned to normal with the celebs sat behind their judging panel waiting for the next contestant.

And out comes Makayla, all ready to blast out her rendition of Rainbow.

When breaking into song, Katy broke down and couldn’t help but cry following the day’s events.

Putting her face down onto the table, she gasped: ‘I’m alright.’

The soon-to-be mum took to Twitter shortly after the episode aired, and said: ‘Nothing to be embarrassed about, #MakaylaBrownlee. We all handle stress differently.

‘That was the sweetest performance of ‘Rainbow’ #MakalylaBrownlee. So thrilled you were able to come back and sing for us and give us that perspective we need to be reminded of sometimes.’
