Katherine Jenkins steps in to help fireman propose on stage at one of her concerts

Katherine Jenkins, 39, helped a member of her crew make a very romantic proposal last month.

The classical singer was on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in the middle of December for her festive concert – Christmas with Katherine Jenkins and Friends – when the proposal took place.

The happily married star, who tied the knot with American artist Andrew Levitas, 42, five years ago, invited her tour photographer Matt Thorpe, 42, on stage to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage.

Together the opera singer and photographer devised a plan to get his girlfriend Catherine Hammill, 30, on stage during the concert.

While on stage, Katherine pretended to have problems taking a selfie with the audience and called upon Catherine, who works as Matt’s photography assistant to help.

Once the picture was taken, the singer handed over the microphone to Matt who then popped the question in front of 4,000 people.

In doing so, he became the first person to propose on the Royal Albert Hall main stage in almost 150 years.

Thankfully, Catherine accepted the proposal and the couple are now engaged to be married.

Newly emerged pictures captured the romantic moment.

Smartly-dressed Matt, who is also a fireman, went down on one knee to propose to his love in front of the orchestra.

The beautiful blonde could be seen in a three-quarter-length green dress and black suede boots.

Katherine, who looked sensational on the night in a red strapless gown, jumped for joy with her hands in the air when the bride-to-be said yes.

Also performing at the live concert on the night were Britain’s Got Talent Winner Colin Thackery, Composer and Pianist Alexis Ffrench and soul star Marisha Wallace.

Following the performance, Katherine took to her Instagram account to tell her 85,700 followers about the event.

She said: “What an evening! Last night was my 45th performance at the Royal Albert Hall & one of my favourites yet!”

The mum-of-two went on to say: “A huge thank you to the friends who shared their talents – I was absolutely blown away by you and the @royalalberthall LOVED you! @alexisffrench @marishawallace @colinthackerysings & Howard Blake.”

She signed off: “And to the love birds that got engaged on stage, Congratulations!!!”
