Celebrity parents such as Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Heigl have been opening up about how they are trying to educate their children about racism.
The world continues to call for justice and demand the end of systemic racism in America following the shocking death of George Floyd, and for many parents, this has led to serious conversations with their young children.
Reese Witherspoon has urged parents to talk to their children about ‘racism, privilege, bigotry and hate.
The 44-year-old actress explained she had been talking to her seven-year-old son Tennessee about the current protests taking place in America.
While the conversations have been ‘heartbreaking’, she insisted it was important to use her voice to educate her brood.
Reese – who has Tennessee with her husband Jim Toth, and has Ava, 20, and Deacon, 16, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – went on to demand ‘justice’ for George’s death, and said people need to be ‘held accountable’ for their actions.
And the Legally Blonde star added she hopes to see an end to prejudice around the world.
Meanwhile 27 Dresses actress Katherine Heigl admitted she feared how talking to her daughter about racism will ‘break a piece of her beautiful divine spirit’.
The 41-year-old actress adopted her eight-year-old daughter Adalaide at birth in 2012, and has said she is struggling to find the words to properly inform her of the protests.
Katherine stated she didn’t know how to explain that to her young daughter that George died last week after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
The former Grey’s Anatomy star – who also has adopted daughter Naleigh, 11, and biological son Joshua, three, with her husband Josh Kelley – went on to say she felt ‘hopeless, but knew she must speak out for the sake of her brood.
Elsewhere, Iskra Lawrence has promised to protect her daughter from racial discrimination.
The 29-year-old model – who gave birth on April 16 – took to Instagram and wrote: ‘This is my beautiful innocent black baby. As your mother I will protect you in anyway I can.
‘But I know that will never be enough. Your skin colour will impact your life in a way I will never be able to understand.’
In her post, Iskra identified as a ‘privileged’ white woman whose life experiences are different to those of her boyfriend, songwriter Philip Payne.
And she also called on her Instagram followers to join the fight against racism.
Pretty Little Liars alum Shay Mitchell also took to Instagram to explain how the Black Lives Matter movement would affect how she would be raising her daughter.
She wrote: ‘I am hopeful that the next generation will abandon the prejudices of the past, and embrace and accept people based on who they are, versus the colour of their skin.’
Shay captioned a snap of her daughter Atlas, 7 months, and her longtime partner, Matte Babel: ‘Black or White. It doesn’t matter. All she sees are people who love her.
‘Racism is a learned behaviour. It starts and stops at home.’
It comes after January Jones shared a rare post of her son Xander to share her thoughts about the future, and singer Thomas Rhett promised to fight for his daughter’s rights.
