Kate Wright has opened up on how being a step-mum to husband Rio Ferdinand’s kids hasn’t always been easy.

The star married footballer Rio back in October 2019, with his daughter Tia acting as her maid of honour, while sons Lorenz and Tate walked her halfway down the aisle.

Kate and the kids have a great relationship, although she revealed it’s not always been a walk in the park.

The former Towie star recalled an argument she’d had with them in the car, with one of the kids telling her: ‘You don’t know, you’re not my mum.’

‘The minute they said it, there was a gasp,’ she explained to The Times magazine. ‘They’ve never said it again.’

She went on to say: ‘I’m not their mum. But I act like a mum and I see them as my children.’

Kate took some time to adjust to family life, with the star admitting she was fixated on the idea of being the perfect mum.

However, after ‘a lot of counselling’, she realised she’s better off just being herself.

And it’s clearly worked a treat, with Kate and the kids seemingly getting on like a house on fire, and the family recently jetting off to the Maldives to spend Christmas in the sun.

The TV star previously revealed how she and Rio ‘saved each other’ after his first wife Rebecca died from breast cancer.

Recalling how they met, the TV star told the Sun On Sunday: ‘We really did save each other. Rio was at a stage in his life where he had lost his wife and I was also lost.

‘I faced a struggle with anxiety, panic attacks and low self-esteem. They are my family. I love them dearly and they have helped me go on a journey to love myself and figure out who I am.’

She continued: ‘We have all been through bad times and yet we are all together. Going through so much brings you even closer.

‘Rio and the kids mean everything to me.’
