Kate Hudson was very nearly in 10 Things I Hate About You

Ready for yet another reminder of just exactly how old you are? Here goes: 10 Things I Hate About You is turning 20 years old in just three days’ time.

Sorry, everyone.

Mortality reminders aside, this significant anniversary in teen film history has had plenty of people looking back recently at the much-loved rom-com, which of course starred the fresh-faced likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger.

A retrospective look at the making of 10 Things I Hate About You has been compiled this week by The New York Times, featuring a number of interviews with some of the key players behind the Gil Junger-directed movie.

Casting director Marcia Ross spoke in the NYT feature about which actors came close to signing up for the Taming of the Shrew modernisation, revealing that Kate Hudson was very nearly cast – before her mum, Goldie Hawn, stepped in and spoiled the fun.

‘The other person I loved was Kate Hudson,’ Ross recalled about the casting process.

‘But her mom [Hawn] didn’t like the script for her, so she passed.’

Instead, Hudson’s 1999 saw her star in the long-forgotten movie 200 Cigarettes… what could’ve been, eh?

Ross also disclosed that producers also screen-tested Josh Hartnett and Eliza Dushku, while Katie Holmes was also considered just before she landed a role in Dawson’s Creek (remember that?!).

‘But Julia and Heath just had the best chemistry together,’ Ross added about the two stars who made the final cast list.

David Krumholtz, who played the geeky Michael Eckman, agreed with Ross’ sentiments, praising Ledger’s work on the film in particular with a sweet tribute to his memory.

‘I prefer to remember Heath as a 20-year-old kid doing his first American lead with a big giant Cheshire grin smile on his face, taking charge as the leader of the group like any good ensemble leader should.’
