Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper has said his first word after being hospitalised with coronavirus for the past six months.

The Good Morning Britain host said that, as part of her husband’s recovery, the doctors manipulated his body to stop him from seizing up.

As she watched over FaceTime, she saw him whisper the word ‘pain’.

Kate, 53, explained that she’s seeing it as a breakthrough, saying: ‘It’s a case of trying to balance belief, hope, optimism with reality.

‘But we have had a breakthrough which was both amazing yet heartbreaking.’

She added to The Sun: ‘Right from the beginning, when Derek couldn’t even open his eyes, the doctors and nurses have always talked to him to be respectful, and to try to trigger a response.

‘As they were shifting him, they asked if he could feel anything — not expecting a response as he hadn’t previously. But suddenly he mouthed in a whisper, “Pain”.’

The presenter described it as ‘heart-wrenching’ to see, but still a ‘huge breakthrough’, as she recalled bursting into tears after finding out what he had said.

Derek is thought to have had the UK’s longest case of coronavirus, battling it for the past six months after being taken to intensive care in March.

Kate has been updating fans on his recovery ever since, most recently explaining on Good Morning Britain that he has been ‘pretty stable’ but is going through ‘ups and downs’.

She told her co-host Susanna Reid: ‘I’m doing ok… the problem is, is that I feel I’m just boring everyone to death. It’s the same thing, he’s stable. ‘In between, there’s big ups and big downs – well, not big ups, small improvements. The last few days have been pretty stable, so fingers crossed, really.’

Meanwhile, the star is reportedly set to front an ITV documentary about the virus.

‘Kate has been seen on GMB regularly talking about Derek and his ongoing battle against coronavirus and now she has decided to use her viewpoint to make a documentary,’ a source began.

‘As well as looking at what she had gone through the programme will also speak to survivors of the disease, people on the frontline and economic experts who will give insight about the impact of coronavirus.’

‘The idea is to look at the virus and its impact in a number of different ways to show how it has affected so many people around the country,’ the source added to the Daily Mirror.
