Kate Garraway opens up about terrifying motorway blowout

Kate Garraway has spoken about the terrifying moment her car tyre blew on the motorway as she took her kids on their first road trip since husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with coronavirus.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter had told her followers on social media about the “utterly terrifying” moment she had a near miss after managing to control her car after her tyre was destroyed.

The GMB co-host joined Ben Shepherd in the studio as she continues her return to our screens after having a few months off as her husband battled to save his life after being in intensive care with the effects of Covid-19.

Kate had shared a few details online about the moment she narrowly avoided an accident on the motorway and now she has revealed more details of the almost life-changing incident.

Kate, 53, took to Instagram to thank police for coming to the rescue

Kate’s back tyre exploded and she admitted she felt ‘panicked’ after the incident.

Speaking on the ITV breakfast show, Kate said the tyre “suddenly exploded and couldn’t control the car.”

Kate said: “I have never had it before and it the sort of thing you dread.

“It was the first time that I had been out with the kids in the car, leaving London, going to meet some friends in Kent, in a socially distanced way.

“On the way back, it suddenly exploded.”

Kate went on to describe what happened: “I had that moment when you suddenly think, ‘I can’t control the car’.

“All weird steering, smoke and bits of rubber flying everywhere and I managed to pull over.”

The presenter posted a photo of her car’s burst and badly damaged tyres

“It happened to be on a section of motorway where there wasn’t a hard shoulder and there was a feeder road going off and I was nervous of people coming up on the inside and pulled over and the drama unfolded.

“That’s when you feel a bit panicky because you are in live traffic.”

Kate said that she was looking to get back home so that she could check in with Derek.

She continued: “We were rushing back to London check on Derek and my mum and dad were coming for their first visit.

Derek Draper is recovering from a coronavirus battle that left him in a coma

“You know that people say God and the universe doesn’t send you what you can’t deal with. I would just like to put the message out, I am at my limit.”

On Sunday night, Kate admitted to feeling shaken up but assured fans she and the kids were fine – posting an image of the damaged tyre, and the police officers who helped her.

She wrote on  Instagram  : “Thanks to our amazing saviours Liz & Mark from  @kentpoliceuk  who rescued me after a full tyre blow out on the motorway!!!

“Never had one before – utterly terrifying. Managed to keep control of car but couldn’t get off motorway as no hard shoulder & when the AA said they couldn’t come for an hour, then rang after half an hour to say might still be an hour had no choice but to call the police.”

Kate continued: “They were so brilliant and got us to safety and we are now on way home in taxi, shaken but safe, tow truck on way to car.”

Derek remains in hospital after being left in a serious condition, due to the damage caused to his body by Covid-19.

Kate remains hopeful that her husband will recover and return home soon, after she revealed she was able to visit him for the first time.

Last week, Kate said on air that Derek had watched her on GMB for the first time since waking from his coma.
