Kate Garraway shared a video of her and her children clapping for the NHS on Thursday night, telling her followers she had an ‘extra special reason’ to honour the frontline staff.

She shared the touching footage of her neighbours all joining in with the clapping just hours before it was revealed her husband, Derek Draper, is currently being treated in intensive care for coronavirus.

Kate wrote alongside the video: ‘We had a an extra special reason to #clapthecarers in our house tonight but there’s a special reason for us all isn’t there.

‘Thank thank you to all the health workers caring for our loved ones and key workers keeping our lives going. You are incredible.’

Derek has been in hospital since Monday, and Kate’s rep confirmed that he was being treated in the ICU with a confirmed case of coronavirus.

They told Metro.co.uk: ‘Kate’s husband, Derek Draper, has been taken to hospital and is being treated in intensive care with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

‘He was admitted on Monday and has since tested positive for the virus. Kate, hasn’t been tested, however she has also been displaying mild symptoms, also since Monday, and as a result has been on strict isolation with her children at home.’

Kate and Derek, both 52, have been married since 2005, with Derek proposing to her once more after she left the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here jungle last year.

What does self-isolation mean?

Self-isolation means staying indoors and avoiding all contact with other people for 14 days, according to the NHS.

It means no going to work, school, the shops or even to the park for some fresh air, in order to minimise the risk of passing on Covid-19.

Public transport and taxis are a no-no and you shouldn’t have visitors over, even if you just stay at home.

Anyone in self-isolation is advised to ask friends, family and delivery drivers to pick things up for you and drop them-off. You should put a sign outside telling people you are self-isolating and everything should be left on the floor outside your front door to avoid the risk of further infections.

Those who are self-isolating are still advised to stay away from their pets as much as possible and to wash their hands before and after touching them.

If you live in a house share and have to self-isolate, the advice is to stay in your room with the door closed and only emerge to use communal kitchens, bathrooms and living areas if absolutely necessary.

Who should self-isolate?

The government advises anyone returning from Category 1 areas (Hubei, Iran, Italy and Daegu or Cheongdo in South Korea), to go straight home and self-isolate, even if they don’t display any symptoms.

Travellers should use the 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do next.

Anyone returning from Category 2 areas should self-isolate and call 111 if they have Covid-19 symptoms. You can find the list of those places here.

Fellow Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan also shared support for Kate on Twitter, writing: ‘Now it’s been made public, I can say this horrendous situation has brought the Coronavirus crisis sharply into the hearts of all of us @GMB. My love & prayers to Kate & Derek.’

Susanna Reid added: ‘All my love to Kate and Derek.’

Following last week’s initial #ClapForCarers, it was decided that the public would clap for the NHS workers and frontline staff working amid the pandemic each Thursday evening at 8pm.
