Kate Garraway explains why she can't see Derek on their wedding anniversary

Kate Garraway was emotional after saying that she is unable to see husband Derek Draper on their wedding anniversary today.

The 53-year-old took a break from Good Morning Britain to help her children settle into school last week.

She has also been looking after Derek as he continues to recover from coronavirus, which he contracted earlier this year.

Derek still remains in hospital but has awoken from his coma and is recovering from the extensive damage the virus has done.

However, she returned today and revealed that it was her and Derek’s wedding anniversary – but sadly she wouldn’t be able to see him.

She told hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray: “It’s actually Derek and I’s wedding anniversary today, unbelievably.

“15 years today – Richard and Hilary were there on the day, I think. But yeah, what an extraordinary thing.

“I won’t be able to see him today. I kind of hoped he would but it hasn’t worked out that way for the visits. But maybe it would be a bit strange anyway.

“So yeah, it’s a tough day but he’s still here. There’s not a huge amount that’s changed.”

Kate had updated fans in July, announcing that Derek had emerged from his coma into a “state of minimum consciousness.”

She added that she hadn’t seen her co-stars for ages, saying: “There’s so much that happens in those couple of weeks – seeming positives and plungings.”

She told GMB viewers in late August that she’d be taking some time out to help son Billy and daughter Darcey return to school.

Kate also said that she would be looking after Derek.

The presenter went on to thank her thank her co-stars for their support during such a difficult time.

She said: “I just want to say thanks to all of you for being absolutely brilliant since I’ve come back through challenging times.

“Everyone here, you, Ben, Adil and all of the people off and on screen have been amazing.

“The nice thing is everyone talks about ITV and television being this brutal business, and it ‘s not, it’s a family and you’ve all been amazing.”
