Kate Garraway doesn't know if husband will recover from COVID ordeal: 'New normality'

Jane Moore detailed to the Loose Women panel this afternoon how she met with GMB‘s Kate Garraway after she’d appeared on the ITV breakfast show last Friday. Kate has stepped down from presenting duties as her husband Derek continues to recover from coronavirus, an illness which has left him hospitalised for almost 10 weeks now. Kate revealed on GMB that her husband was COVID free but was yet to regain consciousness after being placed in a coma, a heartbreaking fact Jane revealed is becoming a “new normality” for her colleague.

Loose Women host Andrea McLean began the discussion: “Kate talked emotionally on Friday’s Good Morning Britain,

“But Jane, you actually went to see Kate didn’t you?”

Jane replied: “Yeah, I went up – I spent a couple of hours with her in her garden at a safe distance and did an interview with her,

“We’ve always know that Kate is incredibly strong and an amazing woman,

“But I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.”

Jane continued: “You know, Derek, he contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital.

“It looked initially that he might sort of have like a Boris Johnson experience and come out sort of largely unscathed,

“But it’s attacked all of his vital organs. He’s now COVID free, they bought him out of the come, they put him into an induced coma, they brought him out of the coma and he’s not regained consciousness yet.”

The Loose Women added: “So every day she’s just living with this awful uncertainty.”

Jane then revealed how Kate is continuing to deal with the harrowing ordeal.

The Loose Women star said: “And now she’s talking about how, maybe, it’s a new normality,

“They’re preparing her, they’re saying maybe the new normality is that they’re never going to know whether he’ll recover.”

Kate bravely opened up about her husband’s current state in a half-hour-long interview on GMB which saw her and co-host Ben Shephard in tears.

During Friday’s interview, Kate said: “The fight with the virus has been won, but it’s wreaked extraordinary damage to his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that,”

“It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.”

Kate also referenced the uncertainty Jane was speaking of as well as how it will affect her children.

She said: “I just have to think, I need to make them feel safe, they’ve lost for the time being – let’s pray – their dad and he’s their world, so they need to see that their mum is okay.

“The problem is I have huge hope and massive positivity and will never give up on that because Derek is the core of our lives, but at the same time I have absolute uncertainty,”

Loose Women continues every weekday at 12:30pm on ITV.
