Kate Ceberano reveals the real reason she went on The Masked Singer

She was unmasked as the Lion last year on Network 10’s hit show The Masked Singer.

And singer-songwriter Kate Ceberano has revealed the surprising reason why she decided to appear on the reality TV singing competition. 

Speaking to Stellar, the 53-year-old said she was ‘heartbroken’ that there were no longer shows like Countdown or Hey Hey It’s Saturday to showcase talented singers.

‘There is nowhere Australian artists can get into people’s houses and show kids we have our own music industry here,’ she said.

‘It seemed like a good format to go, “G’day, I’m an Australian singer who’s been around for donkey’s years”.’

Kate also revealed she’d had a ball dressing up in costume for the show.

 ‘It was fun to be like David Bowie or KISS, get dressed by Academy Award-winning costume designers and sing contemporary songs like Billie Eilish,’ she said. 

Once she was unmasked on the hit show, Kate said that the experience was transformative for her.  

‘Being in a suit you are without colour, age, size, your gender – it’s completely based on what you are, you’re just free,’ she said.

The acclaimed sonstress also wanted to inspire her teenage daughter.

Kate added: ‘I have a near 16-year-old daughter. I want her to know that you can never ever be fooled by even your own insecurities, you must always give it a good, hard crack.’
