‘I had to get an Uber this morning!’ Karl Stefanovic jokes about his infamous Ubergate scandal on 2GB radio – before asking the censor to ‘dump’ the recording
Karl Stefanovic was embroiled in the ‘Ubergate’ scandal last year, when his private phone conversation with his brother Peter was leaked to the press.
But the regrettable saga hasn’t discouraged the former Today show host from using the ride-sharing service.
While appearing on 2GB’s Steve Price Show on Tuesday, Karl made light of Ubergate as he recalled his journey to work that morning using the app.

‘I have recently purchased a ute, a HiLux, but it just hasn’t arrived yet, and I had to get an Uber this morning to work,’ he said.
Karl then complained about his journey, adding: ‘It took about 65 minutes, because unfortunately the driver didn’t know which was she was going.’
‘Were you on the phone?’ his co-host cheekily asked, to which Karl replied: ‘I see where you’re going with this. Can I get one of those dump buttons?’
He continued: ‘I was on the phone actually, I was speaking to my brother [Peter], who’s in very good health at Sky News.’

The conversation had been overhead by an Uber driver, who was listening as his passenger, Peter, spoke to Karl loudly on speakerphone.
Reflecting on the scandal in May, Peter spoke about his feelings of shame and embarrassment in an interview with the Herald Sun.
‘I was embarrassed, I was ashamed about it all too because I got my network into trouble… I got my wife [Sylvia Jeffreys] and brother [Karl] into trouble; and I took that really hard,’ he said.

Karl was a host of Channel Nine’s Today show for 13 years between 2005 and 2018, while Peter was an anchor on Weekend Today between 2016 and 2018.
While Karl is still employed by Channel Nine, he has been notably absent from programming in recent months.
Meanwhile, Peter began his new role at Sky News on July 1, after Nine decided not to renew his contract the previous December.
