He added: ‘I’m consumed with politics. I’m tweeting from morning until night, and I’m paying a terrible price for it.’

Kamahl also revealed his wife struggled to come to terms with his fame and the fact that he would spend up to six months a year away from home.

‘I think she was sick and tired, and frustrated,’ he said of his wife’s decision to walk away from their marriage.

Speaking about their relationship, he added: ‘Ours was made in heaven, but the weather changed.’

But Kamahl insisted he didn’t hold any animosity towards his wife, and said ‘she is the saint, I am the sinner’.

The Hey Hey It’s Saturday star shared the sad news of the split last Monday, telling New Idea he’s praying the breakup is ‘only temporary’.

‘She really is the wind beneath my wings. I now realise I probably wasn’t the most attentive husband. Fame can do that – it can distract you from what really matters,’ he said.

‘But I’m keeping everything crossed we can work through this rough patch, as she really is my everything,’ he added.

The Malaysian-born star – whose real name is Kandiah Kamalesvaran – has moved out of the marital home and is living alone at a country club in Sydney’s northern beaches.

Kamahl said he regrets taking his wife’s ‘graciousness for granted’ and wishes he’d given her ‘more hugs’ during their long marriage.

The estranged couple remain close, however, regularly meeting up for dinner: ‘She still cooks me her unbelievably delicious lamb shanks every fortnight.’

Kamahl married Sahodra in 1967 without the approval of his family, and they share two adult children, musician Rajan, 52, and singer Rani, 50.
