Juventus 'plan £150m Virgil van Dijk bid' in hope Liverpool star will seek new challenge

Juventus are reportedly planning a £150million summer bid for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk in a plot to lure him to Turin.

The Serie A club are willing to make van Dijk the most-expensive defender in world football for the second time in his career, by doubling the £75m Liverpool paid for him in 2018.

Van Dijk has cemented his status as one of the world’s leading centre-backs during his time at Anfield, and Juve feel he would be key to securing them the Champions League.

The Sun report that Juve are hopeful van Dijk’s success with Liverpool could tempt him to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Liverpool are on course to end their 30-year wait for a league title this season, to add to their Champions League and Club World Cup crowns, which would see van Dijk complete the set of main major honours.

Speaking last week, van Dijk said: “I’m 28 now and I want to fulfil every dream I ever had.

“Life can be short. Your career can be short as well.

“I’m enjoying playing with this team and this manager. We can’t look too far ahead. But right now, I’m enjoying it.”

A move this summer seems incredibly unlikely however, given van Dijk only signed a new six-year deal with Liverpool in September.

Juventus have been going all out to land their first European Cup since 1996, having lost in the final on five occasions in the intervening years, with their £100m investment in Cristiano Ronaldo an indication of their ambition.

It was only last summer though that the Old Lady splashed out more than £60million to take van Dijk’s international defensive partner Matthijs de Ligt to the Stadio delle Alpi.

Van Dijk was on form against Southampton for Liverpool on Saturday, helping to keep another clean sheet – they’re ninth in the previous 10 Premier League games.

Goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, and two from Mohamed Salah helped the Reds to a 4-0 win over the south coast side, to extend their lead at the top to 22 points.
