Jurgen Klopp wins prestigious German award for record-equalling third time

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been named Coach of the Year by The Association of German Sports Journalists.

Klopp inspired his side to Champions League glory last season, his first trophy as Liverpool manager, and also came just a whisker away from winning the Premier League, just missing out to Manchester City in one of the closest title races in recent memory.

He and his side won plenty of plaudits for their attacking, fast-paced football, and as a result Klopp has been honoured by journalists in his native country.

He won the award by a landslide, finishing 44 votes ahead of second-placed Friedhelm Funkel, who took Fortuna Dusseldorf to a surprise 10th place finish in the Bundesliga.

Klopp also won the award in 2011 and 2012 while he was in charge of Dortmund, and he is the only man to win it three times other than ex-Fulham manager Felix Magath, who won it in 2003, 2005 and 2009.

Speaking after receiving the award Klopp said: “I know who I owe this great award to: my team and my coaching team. Only as a collective can we achieve the successes we have achieved.

“I am also happy for Friedhelm Funkel and Adi Hutter (Eintracht Frankfurt’s head coach, who came third), whose great work has been recognised.”

Dortmund’s Marco Reus won the Footballer of the Year award after an impressive season which saw him score 17 goals in 27 games in the Bundesliga.

Klopp will be hoping he can break the record by winning the award for a fourth time after next season, but may need to win Liverpool their first ever Premier League title in order to do so.

He has brought in just two signings so far this summer, with youngsters Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott joining the club, and it remains to be seen if there are any more fresh faces before they start their Premier League campaign with a home game against Norwich on August 9.
