Jurgen Klopp relieved after admitting Jordan Henderson injury "could have been worse"

Jurgen Klopp reckons Liverpool are lucky that skipper Jordan Henderson will only be sidelined for “around three weeks”.

The Reds captain and leader picked what appeared a serious hamstring injury in Madrid in midweek, prompting fears he could miss most of the rest of the season.

But after going to a private hospital in the city on Friday morning, scans revealed the damage is not as extensive as first feared, and that raises the hopeful prospect of the midfielder missing just three matches.

Speaking at his pre match press conference for the game against West Ham on Monday night, the manager said: “Hendo could have been worse.

Jordan Henderson had to be substituted in the defeat to Atletico Madrid

“How we all know, it was a hamstring thing, and we’ve heard of different hamstring injuries around the Premier League (being long absences) – Harry Kane, for example – (but) it’s not that bad.

“He will be out for, I think, three weeks or so, which is not cool. But, how we see it, we were still lucky. “

If Henderson’s recovery and rehab goes well, then he could be in contention to play in the Premier League game at Anfield against Bournemouth on March 7, but if that comes too soon, the Champions League return with Atletico on Wednesday 11 would be the target.

Klopp explained that with the rest of his squad now available – Xherdan Shaqiri apart – he would have made chances in the intervening period anyway, with his captain likely to be rested at some point.

“I could (make changes) because, apart from Hendo, all the other boys are fit. But Tuesday-Monday, there’s absolutely no need to do it, that’s enough time and longer than we usually have,” he said.

“We will see who will start and stuff like this, and maybe we will make more changes, but not because [of the turnaround].

“But there would have been a chance anyway because Hendo wouldn’t have played all the games from now until the end of the season. It’s a position where we can react, so we will react.”

Klopp though, admits the leadership qualities of his skipper will be sorely missed: “Yeah. Hopefully nothing else happens. Hendo is exceptionally important, football-wise and for some other reasons too.

“We have still options, and that’s good. There’s a chance for all of them.”
