Jurgen Klopp has refused to confirm Liverpool’s interest in Red Bull Salzburg attacker Takumi Minamino but admits he has been impressed by the Japan international.

The German coach, who signed a contract extension until 2024 earlier on Friday, got a first-hand glimpse of Minamino in action when Salzburg faced off against Liverpool in the Champions League, scoring and assisting at Anfield.

Minamino seemingly left a big impression, with Liverpool reportedly alerted to his bargain £7.25million release clause and setting up a January transfer.

However, Klopp opted not to confirm the rumours – an approach he has always taken in press conferences – though he did acknowledge that Minamino is one of many Salzburg players that caught his eye.

Asked for an update on the deal, Klopp said on Friday: ‘There is nothing else to say about it actually.

‘We speak about it really in the moment like we do about all transfers, potential transfers and whatever, you know when it’s sorted. Not earlier. So there’s nothing really to say about it.

‘He’s a very good player, I can say that. But I saw a few very good players in the Salzburg team to be honest – much more than I wanted, especially in the first half! Yeah, that’s it.’

Although Klopp did not want to divulge any more details about Liverpool’s interest in Minamino, Red Bull Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund has already confirmed that talks have taken place.

‘I won’t comment on contract details. But it’s true there are talks with Liverpool,’ he said yesterday.

‘It’s an honour for our club that the current Champions League winners and other big clubs are looking at our players.’

When asked if a January transfer could happen, Freund replied: ‘That could be possible.’
