Jurgen Klopp provides Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain injury update after Club World Cup final

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury put a “big shadow” over Liverpool’s Club World Cup triumph.

Midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain hobbled off in the 72nd minutes of the Reds victory over Flamengo in Qatar.

The England international landed awkwardly after an innocuous aerial battle and looked in incredible pain as physios rushed on to tend to him.

He turned down the assistance of a stretcher to limp to the touchline, where he was replaced by Adam Lallana.

The damage to Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to be to his ankle, and that seemed to be confirmed as he went back onto the pitch to join in the celebration with a moon boot covering his right foot.

He also used crutches to get around but refused to let it get in the way of picking up his winner’s medal.

Klopp was unsure of the extent of the injury in the immediate aftermath.

The German said: “He feels okay, we will see. It’s not perfect, but we will see.

“If it’s stretched or partly ruptured, we have to see. That’s a big shadow, that’s how it is in contact sport.”

Former Arsenal ace Oxlade-Chamberlain missed a year of action when he suffered a career threatening knee injury.

Since his return, at the end of last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain has started to see plenty of game time in a competitive midfield.

He is the latest midfielder at Anfield to be ruled out – with Fabinho out until the New Year with an ankle injury and Gini Wijnaldum struggling with his hamstring.

Roberto Firmino was the Liverpool hero with his extra time winner.

And Klopp was happy for the Brazilian. He said: “If one is not scoring the other one, or the other two, are scoring. We needed his goals here and I couldn’t be more happy for him.

“Before the game we spoke a lot about how much this means to Brazilians, and it meant a lot to him. I am really delighted for him.

“We are exhausted from a very intense game but in moments of like this, I struggle to find the right words, to express my respect for the boys.

“It was incredible, we did so many good things, everyone was on the edge pretty much and there were so many sensational, good performances.”
