Jurgen Klopp likens Liverpool's Christmas fixture pile-up to I'm a Celebrity trial

Jurgen Klopp has compared Liverpool’s fixture congestion to ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

The Reds have already played three times in December and have five, potentially six, more matches this month before three more games before the middle of January.

Their pile-up isn’t helped by having two clashes scheduled within 24 hours, due to their Carabao Cup semi-final with Aston Villa, and their inclusion in the FIFA Club World Cup – for which they will split their squad between the two competitions.

Premier League leaders Liverpool face Watford on Saturday, four days after progressing to the Champions League group stage, before tough matches with second placed Leicester on Boxing Day and a Merseyside Derby with Everton in the FA Cup in the first week of next year.

And Klopp feels that just because it is possible to play so many matches in a short space of time, it doesn’t mean that you should – just like celebrities eating various body parts on the hit reality show.

“I loved Boxing day matches as a supporter when I came over to England,” Klopp told BT Sports. “There is no problem with the Christmas schedule – it is the games around.

“There are absolutely too many games. It is possible to play them but not with the same quality you should show.

“It is like in the jungle where you have to eat a kangaroo whatever. You know you should not do it but it is a ‘let’s see how it goes’.

“People tell you that it is about money and because you earn all this money you have to do it. On one side that is true but on the other it is completely wrong because we always get injuries in this period and you have to work out how to deal with it.

“We are talking about human beings, so if they get injured it is not cool.

“For the best players they get no break. They play the summer through – they played in the Nations League, then all this stuff. It is not okay.

“The fixture list makes our life really complicated.

“We are in the middle of a circus like all the lions and tigers jumping through the fire.”
