Jurgen Klopp confirmed Jordan Henderson was brought off during Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid due to a hamstring injury, but he is hopeful that he will not be without his skipper for too long.
Henderson was brought off after 80 minutes and replaced by James Milner on what was a difficult night in Madrid for the Premier League leaders.
A goal within the first five minutes for the hosts, courtesy off Saul Niguez, set the tone and Liverpool – far from their fluid best – were left chasing the game against Diego Simeone’s dogged outfit.
While Sadio Mane’s substitution was tactical to avoid him getting sent off after picking up a yellow card, Henderson’s withdrawal was due to injury, although Klopp is hopeful it won’t be too serious a setback.
‘It was hamstring which I hope was precaution,’ Klopp told BT Sport after the match.
‘I am not 100% sure but we will see.’
Henderson’s team-mate Virgil van Dijk said after the match: ‘We conceded the goal from the corner, first chance for them, not even a chance. Bit of luck.
‘The message at half time was to keep playing. We had the ball most of the game but unfortunately could not create massive opportunities. We still have another 90 minutes to set it right.
‘It is the way they play. It is a bit of the Spanish football as well and you have to adapt but we knew it and I feel we handled it pretty well.’
