Jurgen Klopp explains why Liverpool signed Harvey Elliott

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has high hopes for 16-year-old Harvey Elliott after the winger completed his transfer to the Reds from Fulham .

Elliott, who has appeared for England U15 and U17, made history last season by becoming the youngest ever Premier League player when he came on as a substitute for Fulham against Wolves at the age of just 16 years and 30 days.

Elliott made his debut for the Reds when he came on for the final 11 minutes of the 3-0 loss to Napoli in Edinburgh and made a good impression.

He is not able to turn professional until next April, when he turns 17, but Klopp is already tipping the player to become a star.

Speaking after the match Klopp said: “I could say so many positive things about the boy, we signed him, he came here, he decided on us and could have gone pretty much everywhere but he wanted to be part of Liverpool .

“The stories with the boy start early and already he is the youngest ever Premier League player and has broken quite a few records because of his talent.

“Now he is here so let’s work with him. He needs game time, we will see where he gets that but he is obviously a fine, fine footballer and that’s why we were really interested.”

Elliott becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer, along with another promising teenager, 17-year-old centre-back Sepp van den Berg, who signed from Dutch side PEC Zwolle for £1.7m last month.

Along with Elliott he made his Liverpool debut against Napoli, coming off the bench in the defeat.

The two could feature again in Liverpool’s final pre-season game on Wednesday against Lyon in Geneva before the Reds take on Manchester City in the season opening Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.
