Jurgen Klopp concedes Liverpool capitulation after Shrewsbury seal FA Cup replay

Jurgen Klopp conceded that League One strugglers Shrewsbury deserved their FA Cup fourth-round replay after his Liverpool side threw away a two-goal lead on Sunday.

A much-changed Reds appeared to be cruising into the fifth round but substitute Jason Cummings had the New Meadow stadium rocking with a memorable brace.

First he coolly tucked away a 65th-minute penalty and then he outpaced Liverpool’s nervy back four to beat Adrian with a cool right-foot finish from the edge of the area.

The visitors took the lead through teenager Curtis Jones after 15 minutes and the seven-time Cup winners doubled their lead 28 seconds after half-time when Donald Love scored an own goal.

But they now face a replay at Anfield and Klopp accepted they were fortunate not to lose the clash.

He told the BBC: “It’s difficult to win the game. We don’t have enough time to say all the things which weren’t right today.

“We scored a really good goal but apart from that, Adrian had absolutely too much to do. He was brilliant. The counter-attacks they had when we lost the ball…

“They slowed the game down in their formation and we lost the ball in the wrong moments. It just didn’t look like it was 2-0 [to Liverpool] on the pitch. It looked like we were 2-1 down.

“But well deserved for Shrewsbury, it was the minimum they deserved. Congratulations to them.”

Shrewsbury super sub Cummings, meanwhile, was delighted with his heroics.

He said “I could have got a hat-trick! It was a dream come true against the best team in the world. Going to Anfield is what it’s all about.

“Anfield will be really good, for the fans, for the chairman making a few quid. We can’t wait to get there.”
