Jurgen Klinsmann backs England to rule world again with 2022 World Cup triumph

Jurgen Klinsmann believes England will rule the world again as they celebrate the anniversary of the 1966 World Cup.

Germany legend Klinsmann took part in a special remake of the greatest moment in English football history when Sir Alf Ramsey’s heroes lifted the trophy on July 30, 1966.

The remastered and colour version will be shown with special interviews on FIFA’s global channel to celebrate 54 years since England beat Germany 4-2 at Wembley.

But former Germany and Tottenham star legend Klinsmann is convinced his old footballing rivals will again lift the trophy – and believes it could be soon.

Klinsmann believes fate plays a major part and, as he recalled his own memories, he suggested this new generation plus timing could be important.

Klinsmann said: “When we won it 1990, under Franz Beckenbauer, who won it as a player and then did it as a manager, that was the first time we won it after being reunited because that was so important to the whole country.

“Who knows the future? Maybe England will win their next World Cup at a time when they need hope. It will definitely come again, no doubt about it.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping to guide England to glory

“Looking back, everything happens for a moment in time. When Germany won its first World Cup in 54, 12 years before England in 1966, it was the World Cup of a team that made Germany stand tall again after World War Two. Then in 74, you had a huge crisis with the oil drama.

“The 66 game was a tremendous final and it leaves us with a lot of great memories.

“Years, years later, my dad explained everything to me for this very special game. The England team was exceptional, the final was at home and a lot of memories. It was a tremendous XI.

“You feel for them, penalty shoot-outs are not fair, you should have a winner in regular time. In 96, both teams had chances to win and that’s the way it goes because you need some luck.”
