Jurassic World 3 Set Video Shows Off Skinless Animatronic Dinosaur

While we wait for some firm details on Jurassic World 3, which will hopefully be coming sooner rather than later, director Colin Trevorrow has shared a new video of an animatronic dinosaur. Not a whole dinosaur, mind you, but the inner-workings of one that is being worked on right now, presumably for use in the upcoming movie. Even though the video, on its own, isn’t much, it could be a good sign for fans of the franchise.

The video sees Colin Trevorrow holding a controller that looks like it could easily belong to a fancy remote-controlled car. Instead, the camera pans over to reveal the head of a dinosaur. At this stage, it’s just the inners-shell, so we can see everything that drives these animatronic creatures. It’s very difficult to know what specific kind of dinosaur this is, since there is so little here to look at. One could argue, at this point in the process, it looks like the stuff of nightmares. For fans though, it provides an interesting window into what it takes to bring these creatures to life.

Looking at the bigger picture, this could mean good things for Jurassic World 3. One of the primary complaints with the first movie in the new series is that it relied heavily on CGI and had very little in the way of practical dinos in it. Fallen Kingdom certainly provided more on that front, but the story, for many, left a lot to be desired. Given the video tease, it seems fair to assume that Colin Trevorrow is going to be working more with animatronic dinosaurs this time around, which could help the movie feel like it shares more DNA with Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park.

Recently, Universal Pictures worked with Trevorrow on the live-action short Battle at Big Rock. Despite being a short, it brought big action and, most importantly, had a nice blend of practical and CGI. One can hope that will carry over to the next movie. As far as the story goes, not much has been revealed. We know for sure that it will be dealing with the ramifications of dinosaurs being out in the real world alongside humans, given what happened at the end of Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow, in addition to directing, penned the screenplay with franchise newcomer Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising).

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively. Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum will be returning as Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm as well. This will mark the first time since the original Jurassic Park that three have appeared together. New additions to the cast, so far, include Mamoudou Athie and DeWanda Wise. Jurassic World 3 is set to hit theaters on June 11, 2021. Be sure to check out the video from Colin Trevorrow’s Twitter account for yourself below.
