Judy Murray says Andy turned down chance to play at Rangers for tennis career

Judy Murray has revealed that her tennis star son Andy Murray turned down the chance to play at Rangers Football Club.

The tennis coach appeared on Celebrity Chase Christmas Special today and made the shock revelation while facing the Chaser.

Judy was asked by Bradley Walsh about she knew her sons Andy and Jamie were good at tennis and the proud mum revealed that the pair were really good at other sports too.

She said: “I think probably when they were around 12 or 13.

“What many people probably don’t realise is that they both did a lot of other sports as well when they were young, it was never just about the tennis.

Bradley was shocked at Judy’s revelation

“When Jamie was 15 he had a handy cap of three at golf as well as being a good tennis player.

“And Andy when he was 14 had to make the decision between tennis and football because he got offered the chance to sign with Glasgow Rangers on a youth thing.

“So it was never just about the tennis, it was just about having as normal a childhood as possible. “

Andy appears to have made the right choice in choosing tennis as in 2004 he won the Junior US Open.

He quickly established himself as one of the top four players in the world but heartache followed as he lost in four consecutive Grand Slam finals.

Then came his big breakthrough – a 2012 Olympic Games gold medal at Wimbledon quickly followed by his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

In 2013, he became the first British man in 77 years to win the Wimbledon singles title.

And a few fans noticed Judy’s comment and took to Twitter.

One said: “Judy Murray on the chase saying Andy had the chance to sign with the famous as a youngster.”

Judy faced The Vixen at the table and brought £3000 back to the team.

The team was made up of TV presenter Scarlett Moffat, actor Bernard Cribbins, sports commentator John Inverdale and Judy.

They went on to beat ‘The Beast’ and won £22,000 for their chosen charities.
