Manchester United star Juan Mata has admitted he would love for the Red Devils to sign Jadon Sancho after he described the Dortmund winger as a ‘great player’.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to sign Sancho last summer but United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League ended their hopes.

However, United have maintained a strong interest and they are leading the chase for Sancho, who Dortmund rate at £120m.

Sancho has attracted interest from across Europe but United are currently the only club willing to match Dortmund’s valuation of Sancho, who is also likely to command wages of around £150,000-a-week.

Mata was holding an Instagram Live session on Thursday with a number of guests, including Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry.

The Spaniard hinted at a special guest to finish off the season and later announced that it was Dortmund ace Mats Hummels.

Mata was inundated with questions about Hummels’ team-mate, Sancho, during the session and he responded to one fan who asked about signing the England star.

‘Should we sign Jadon Sancho?’ said Mata.

‘[Laughs] What do you want me to say?!’

‘We all know he’s a great player. He’s having a fantastic season at Dortmund.

‘But it’s not my responsibility to speak about those things. I like him as a player but I cannot reply to that.’

Almost immediately after answering the question, Mata invited Hummels to the session.

The German then alluded to Mata’s answer, saying that he was already watching the session before being invited on.

‘I was listening to you talking about Sancho!’ said Hummels, as both players burst into laughter.

‘I understand that’.
