Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata spoke with Ed Woodward in his office at Old Trafford following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City on Sunday.

The Spaniard is out of contract in July and is yet to agree a deal to stay at the club.

United are keen to keep the 30-year-old but Mata wants assurances over his place in his place in the side and has seen close friend Ander Herrera agree a £200,000-a-week deal at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mata was an unused substitute as United signed off their season in embarassing fashion with a 2-0 defeat at home to Cardiff City.

However, with Mata’s contract situation still unsolved, the Spaniard could be forgiven for having his mind elsewhere and Andy Mitten claims the former Chelsea man was invited into Woodward’s office after the match.

The pair no doubt have plenty to sort out as the time is ticking on Mata’s contract end date.

Mata is believed to be keen on remaining at the club but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned supporters he will be ruthless with those that he sees no future for at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer will be given around £200m to rebuild the club this summer and there’s expected to be a untypical amount of departures.

Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera said their goodbyes after Sunday’s defeat, while Alexis Sanchez and Marcos Rojo are two likely high profile departures.

United will listen to offers for Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba is expected to push for a move to Real Madrid.
