Josef Sural dead: Aytemiz Alanyaspor footballer dies in tragic bus crash

Sural was travelling in a minibus with Aytemiz Alanyaspor team-mates returning from an away game when the bus crashed.

The bus reportedly crashed three miles from the southern coastal town of Alanya and striker Sural died at hospital.

Club chairman Hasan Cavusoglu has said the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

He said: “According to information I received from our police chief, despite there being two drivers on the vehicle, they were both asleep.

“The crash happened as a result of them both being asleep.”

Former Liverpool and England ace Steven Caulker is also believed to have been on the bus, though the chairman added the other six players injured in the crash were not in critical condition.

The seven players had rented a VIP minibus to return from the club’s 1-1 draw against Kayserispor on Sunday.

Sural had won 20 caps for his country, scoring once, and featured in all of Czech Republic’s Euro 2016 matches.

Former Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse had also been involved in the fixture with local media reporting that he and Caulker were among the players who picked up minor injuries.

It’s been reported that the rest of the squad had made their way home with the team bus or on their own.

Sural was a father of two and had previously played for Sparta Prague, Slovan Liberec and FC Brno.

And Sparta Prague were among the first to pay tribute to their former captain.

The Czech club posted on Twitter: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of our friend and former captain.

“We would like to express our condolences to his family. Šury, we will never forget you. Rest in peace!”

According to Turkish outlet Anadolu, the drivers have been detained following the accident and an investigation had been launched.
