Jose Mourinho's advice to Scott McTominay before handing him Man Utd debut

Former Manchester United midfielder Josh Harrop has revealed what Jose Mourinho said to both him and Scott McTominay before they made their first Premier League starts in 2017.

A youthful team took to the pitch on the last day of the 2016-2017 Premier League campaign as United beat Crystal Palace 2-0, with Harrop, McTominay, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe among those who started.

Although Harrop scored in the game, it was to be his only appearance for the club before moving on to Preston, while McTominay has gone on to become one of United’s best players, and the 22-year-old put in another good performance in their 2-1 win over Tottenham on Wednesday.

The victory came against the manager who gave McTominay his chance in the Premier League, Mourinho, and speaking to The Athletic about the game against Palace Harrop said: “Mourinho pulled us all into his office beforehand and gave us a bit of a speech to settle our nerves.

“He said, ‘Don’t worry too much about the game, you don’t need to try too much. Just relax and enjoy it.'”

Mourinho’s successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued to develop McTominay and regularly start the player, and he was full of praise for him following his display against Spurs, even going as far as to say he could have been a star player for United’s teams under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He would have suited my squad, when I played,” said Solskjaer. “He has come through the academy, he’s one of ours. He knows what Man United means.”

“Not tainted by any super-stardom or fame. He wants to be the best he can. That is the kind of player I want.”

McTominay should be back in action for United when they take on bitter rivals Manchester City on Saturday.
