Jose Mourinho singles out Juan Foyth he ‘learned a lot about’ in Tottenham loss to Bayern Munich

Jose Mourinho says Tottenham’s loss to Bayern Munich provided him with ‘important information’ about his players, especially Juan Foyth, who made a rare start on Wednesday night.

Spurs were downed 3-1 in the Champions League dead rubber, with Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho scoring for the Bavarians while Ryan Sessegnon found the back of the net for the Premier League outfit.

It was as much-changed team that Mourinho fielded as he left Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier out of the squad entirely.

In came the likes of Foyth, and while Mourinho was coy on whether he was impressed with the centre-back or not, he certainly has a clearer picture of his talents after watching him at the Allianz Arena.

‘A good match for me,’ Mourinho told BT Sport. ‘I don’t want to speak about conclusions because it’s too strong a word but I would say it’s important information.

‘I give you clearly a positive example because the positives examples are easier. Today I learn a lot about Foyth, he didn’t play one minute with me until today and I learn more in this 90 minutes than in two or three weeks of work without playing.

‘So no conclusions, but information. Of course we played against a very good team and it’s the best test when you play against good players and good teams.’

The 21-year-old seemed to have a pretty average game on Wednesday night, with his side largely on the back foot over the 90 minutes against the Bundesliga giants.

He did a solid enough job alongside Toby Alderweireld at centre-back, but could not keep out the superior Bayern team.

Mourinho defended his significant squad rotation in the final group stage game in the tournament, saying: ‘I’m happy with the decisions I made and I hope the supporters understand what I did.

‘Internally we made this decision and we think it’s the best decision for the team.’

Spurs return to action on Sunday away to Wolves in the Premier League.
