Jose Mourinho confirmed Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new striker but insists most of the attackers linked to the club are nothing more than speculation.

Paris Saint-Germain ace Edinson Cavani – also linked with Manchester United – and AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek have both been touted for a move to the Premier League giants, who are lacking options through the middle.

England captain Harry Kane limped off against Southampton and has since required surgery on his hamstring, and there are fears he could miss Euro 2020.

With Spurs still hoping to land a top-four spot and go deep in the Champions League, adding a new striker in January could prove essential.

And Mourinho admitted that is what his side are trying to do.

‘Lots of names, I think the majority are from players’ entourage looking to put their names into the market,’ said Mourinho.

‘Do we need a striker? Yes, but it has to be a positive move for us.

‘It’s not easy but we’re trying to add that type of player to the squad.’

The Portuguese manager is also looking forward to welcoming Hugo Lloris back into the fold.

Lloris has returned to training and Mourinho believes he will feel like a new signing once he makes his return from injury.

‘I told [you] one month ago, I said February. So the normal thing is February,’ he added. ‘If you ask me late February or early February, at this moment I go more for early.

‘Things are going well. He’s getting his confidence back, he’s training so I would say he’s one of our new players in the January transfer window.’
