Jose Mourinho rates Tottenham’s title chances after Manchester City win

Jose Mourinho is adamant his Tottenham side are not equipped to fight for the Premier League title, despite Saturday’s convincing win over Manchester City.

Goals from Heung-Min Son and Giovani Lo Celso sent Spurs top of the table, for 24 hours at least, as Mourinho celebrated his first season in charge of the north London club in the perfect fashion.

After their opening weekend defeat against Everton, Mourinho has masterminded an impressive run of form and but for a late collapse against West Ham, as well as the controversial 90th minute refereeing decision which cost them maximum points against Newcastle, Spurs would be even further clear of the chasing pack.

Mourinho, however, is refusing to get carried away and insists it would be unfair to expect his burgeoning side to challenge the likes of champions Liverpool and big-spending London rivals Chelsea so early in his tenure.

He said: ‘It feels good [to be top], but maybe tomorrow we are second again and honestly that would not be a problem for me, I am just happy with the evolution.

‘People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title.

‘We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches.

‘But dinner tonight will be nice and relaxed and I will watch Atletico Madrid v Barcelona and sleep like an angel.

‘But no problem if Leicester wins [tomorrow] and we are second again.’
