Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says the Red Devils are capable of pulling off an upset by beating Barcelona at Old Trafford tonight.

United are severe underdogs to progress to the semi-finals as they take on Lionel Messi and company at the Theatre of Dreams in tonight’s first leg.

Mourinho orchestrated an unlikely 2-1 win against Juventus earlier in the season when he was still at the helm at United, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side pulled off a miraculous 3-1 win away at PSG in the last round.

And Mourinho believes his former club are capable of repeating that success against Barcelona tonight, though he fears Messi will want to leave his stamp on a ‘mythical’ stadium like Old Trafford.

‘United this season was capable to win against Juventus and against PSG why not to do it against Barcelona?’ said Mourinho.

‘Barca will be aware of that, will respect United and Old Trafford. Messi will want to leave his footprint in a mythical stadium’.

United’s slim hopes have been affected by a midfield crisis.

Both Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera are expected to miss the game, meaning two of Andreas Pereira, Fred and Scott McTominay will start at the Theatre of Dreams.
