Jose Mourinho press conference LIVE: Tottenham’s new manager faces media for first time at Spurs

New Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho holds his first press conference this afternoon and you can follow LIVE coverage below.

Mourinho was appointed yesterday by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, as the club moved quickly to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine was adored by the club’s supporters and helped steer them to the Champions League final last season, but Spurs have struggled in recent weeks and are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Latest updates below:

Rodgers has a press conference coming up shortly, as Leicester prepare to play Brighton this weekend at the Amex. We can expect him to be asked about the Spurs job, I’d imagine.

The Daily Mail reports today that Brendan Rodgers was Levy’s first choice before turning to Mourinho. I feel like Rodgers’ style of play would have suited the profile of what is a young and energetic Spurs squad well, but there is something to be said – even all these years later – for the aura of Mourinho having an instant impact. How long the glow lasts is another question…

An hour to go until Jose Mourinho speaks to the media at Tottenham’s Enfield training base…

According to AS in Spain, Jose Mourinho has made re-signing Gareth Bale Tottenham’s top transfer priority, though what order would Spurs fall in Bale’s priorities is unconfirmed. It will have to wait, though, because Real Madrid have said Bale is not leaving in January and Daniel Levy is rumoured to have told Mourinho that there will be no money to spend in the mid-season window.

This, from The Times, is very interesting. Mourinho did something similar with Frank Lampard at Chelsea, telling him he would become the best midfielder in the world while Lampard was naked in the shower. It worked, to be fair:

José Mourinho followed his appointment at Tottenham Hotspur by sending Harry Kane a text message pledging that the pair will win trophies together.
Mauricio Pochettino was relieved of his duties on Tuesday night and Mourinho, 56, was confirmed as his successor yesterday morning. One of the new head coach’s most urgent tasks is to persuade Kane, who was close to the Argentinian, to commit his long-term future to the club.
It is understood that shortly after agreeing to take the job, Mourinho sent the England captain a message telling him that he considers Kane the best striker in Europe and assuring him that the team will win some silverware.
Tottenham have been concerned that Kane, 26, may lose patience with the club’s failure to land a major trophy, even though Pochettino guided them to the Champions League in four successive seasons.

Here’s what one former Tottenham cult hero thinks of the arrival of Jose – and he should know:

Do we think Jose will be able to win the players over? You can imagine they have not exactly warmed to him as opposition players over the years, and will need to call on all of that long-last charm…

Jose Mourinho stood in front of the Tottenham players at the beginning of training yesterday and, according to ESPN, he told them: “Back me and I’ll make you winners.”

From the media side of things, it has been an explosive 48 hours in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho is the kind of character everyone loves to hate, who manages to stir up a storyline everywhere he goes. Tottenham’s press office has been inundated with requests for this afternoon’s first press conference ahead of Tottenham’s match against West Ham United this weekend, to the point where they have had to turn people away and restrict each outlet to one reporter. It’s more than 15 years since he arrived on these shores professing to be a special one, yet he still carries a kind of aura everywhere he goes.

Here’s Jose Mourinho in action yesterday, taking his first training session as Tottenham manager. The session was moved from the morning to the afternoon so the new manager could take charge, and he seemed to be enjoying himself.

Here’s the latest, courtesy of PA, on Jose Mourinho’s arrival and his thoughts on the Tottenham players he has been given:

Jose Mourinho believes he has inherited a talented squad that is full of potential as he prepares to be unveiled as Tottenham’s new head coach later today.
The 56-year-old has been named as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal at the north London club.
He met his new players following his hasty appointment, which was announced less than 12 hours after Pochettino was sacked, on Wednesday and then took training ahead of his first game in charge at West Ham on Saturday.
Despite his intrinsic links to Chelsea, Mourinho has always spoken fondly of Tottenham, touting them as a potential title winner at the start of the season, while he has been in attendance at several games during the current campaign.
The Portuguese boss was always glowing in his praise of Pochettino and has reiterated his delight on Spurs TV at taking on a squad that he believes is full of quality.
“It is a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad that he’s going to have,” said Mourinho, who will be introduced to the media as the new Tottenham boss at 2pm.
“These are not words of the moment. They are not words of me being the Tottenham head coach. These are words that I’ve told and I’ve repeated in the last three, four, five years even as an opponent.
“I always told about the club’s potential. I always told about the qualities of the players. I always told about the magnificent work the club was doing. I really like this squad.”
Mourinho, who has been out of work since losing his job at Manchester United last December, arrives at a club that is languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, having taken 14 points from their 12 games.
Tottenham are 11 points off the top four and while Mourinho stopped short of saying Spurs could bridge that gap, he promised they would be in a better position once he gets going.
“In relation to the Premier League I think we know where we are and we know that we don’t belong there,” he said.
“We should just play match after match. The next match we want to win and that is the same for the next and the next and the next until the last.
“At the end of the season we will see where we are but I know that we are going to be in a different position than we are now. I look forward to the challenge and the responsibility to bring happiness to everyone that loves the club.”
Mourinho moved quickly to appoint his backroom staff, with Joao Sacramento and Nuno Santos joining from Lille as assistant manager and goalkeeping coach, respectively.
Tottenham also confirmed the arrival of Carlos Lalin as fitness coach, Ricardo Formosinho as tactical analyst and Giovanni Cerra as technical analyst. All three worked under Mourinho at Old Trafford.

What next for Mauricio Pochettino? Paris Saint-Germain? Bayern Munich? Here’s why Manchester United should push hard to make sure Old Trafford his next destination:

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is due to face the press at 2pm this afternoon.

We’ll be bringing you live coverage, as well as updates throughout the morning.

At the end of the season we will see where we are but I know that we are going to be in a different position than we are now. I look forward to the challenge, to the responsibility to bring happiness to everyone at the club.

In relation to the Premier League, we know where we are and we know we don’t belong there. We should just play match after match, the next match we want to win and that’ and that’s the same about the next, and the next and the next until the last.

When you say beautiful stadium you are too humble. You have to say the best stadium in the world. I think it’s a reality. The training ground is second to none. It can probably only be compared with some American football training grounds. You cannot compare with European football at any level – and I’ve been in the majority of the best places.

The problem is that sometimes you get into clubs where the work that is below you is not good enough to produce these players so I look to our history and you see that the academy is always giving the talents that the first team need. Of course I look forward to working with that profile.

I always told about the club’s potential. I always told about the qualities of the players. I always told the magnificent work the club was doing. I really like this squad and looking to the young players there is not one manager in the world that doesn’t like to play young players and to help young players to develop. There is not one.

What they have said

Jose Mourinho

“I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters.

“The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Daniel Levy

“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football.

“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached.

“We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
